Quarry by Moonlight

Tonight the quarry is a moonscape.
Shadows fall like veils from the naked moon
And float as the clouds float – smoothly, silently.

Boulders are made by moonlight: grey, bulky beasts.
Rockfaces stand sharp and sheer -
Their jagged rock clothed in moss.
Small rockfalls echo into the dark and into the mind.
The wind whistles through fissures
And lifts the dust from the ground
Into the cold, still air.

Think now of the sweaty work of the workers.
Those who spent long, hard days in this now-silent place:
Silent save for my breaths above this constructed gorge.
Think of the long, hard days spent to keep cities in stone.
Think of the quarry’s history - now silenced by the moonlight…

Mystery deepens as the night deepens...
