Sunrise Over Cow and Calf Rocks (Ilkley)

The winter air was sharp, clear,
And frost-cold.
Over bogs (tamed by the frost)
The grass cracked under my heavy feet.
In the distance
- Behind rockhard Cow and Calf -
The sun rose, elegantly,
Over Bradford or Menston... or so it seemed.

The yellows, oranges, pinks and reds
(Or their neat fusions)
Were against the dark grey, silhouettes
Of the bulky calf
And bulkier cow.
That blend of colours
(Both within the early-morning air
And between the rocks and the sky)
Was pictorial, painterly... but also real.

*) Note: The photo above is from the Baildon/Bradford side of the Cow and Calf Rocks; whereas the poem is about the view from the Ilkley side.
